Meet Kay Lynn Reilly

Fine Art Photographer | Western Storyteller | Desert Dreamer | Wedding Photographer

Hi there, I’m Kay Lynn — a fine art photographer with a deep love for all things wild, Western, and full of color. My work is rooted in the heart of the American West — from dusty rodeo arenas and weathered barns to the vibrant glow of desert cactus blooms. I’ve spent decades behind the lens chasing light, truth, and stories worth telling. What started as weekend weddings and a camera in hand quickly turned into a lifelong adventure in photography, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Whether I’m photographing the split-second intensity of a bronc rider mid-air or the soft pink hues of a cholla at sunrise, I’m always searching for that moment of connection — something real, something that lingers.

How It All Began

I wasn’t the kid dreaming of college, but I was always the one with a camera. In 1974, I signed up for a Saturday photography class just to try something new — and I fell in love. That led to a full AA degree in professional photography, and soon after, I found myself photographing weddings for friends and managing a medical clinic on the side. Eventually, photography won my full heart and full-time focus.

I cut my teeth on weddings, shooting hundreds each year with some of the best mentors in the Pacific Northwest. I learned the ropes at bridal fairs, darkrooms, and portrait studios — all before digital was even a thing. I was one of the first in my region to bring back hand-painted black and white photography, inspired by early photographic history. Turns out, brides loved it. Word got around, and pretty soon, I was booked solid and finally able to say goodbye to the 9-to-5 grind.

From Weddings to Rodeos: A Wild New Chapter

It was a rodeo in Livingston, Montana that changed everything. I didn’t even know what I was walking into — I just followed the sound of jangling spurs and bold fringe. When I saw those cowboys lined up behind the chutes, I knew I had found something special. That was the beginning of my deep dive into rodeo and Western photography.

I traveled across the West — Cheyenne, Cody, Ellensburg, Pendleton — chasing rodeos and the stories behind them. It wasn’t easy getting access, especially as a woman in a very male-dominated arena. But I found ways to earn my space, gain trust, and tell those stories with respect and authenticity. My image Bullriders’ Prayer, shot at the Greeley Stampede, was one of those powerful, unscripted moments that still gives me chills. I’ve since used that piece to support the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund, and it’s one of the works I’m most proud of.

Elopement Photography with Heart

Somewhere along the way, I found myself returning to love stories — but in a whole new way. Today, I specialize in elopement photography for couples who want something a little more personal, a little more wild, and a whole lot more meaningful. Whether it’s a barefoot ceremony on a red rock bluff in Utah or a wind-swept vow exchange in the mountains of Montana, I bring the same storytelling heart to every elopement I photograph.

I believe elopements are about freedom — the freedom to celebrate your love in a way that’s truly your own. And with my background in wedding photography and passion for natural light and emotion, I make sure each image captures that authenticity. Falling in Love with the Desert

When life brought me to Southern Utah and later Tucson, I discovered a whole new muse: cactus. During the pandemic, I started photographing these desert beauties up close — captivated by their texture, structure, and resilience. My fine art cactus photography became a personal healing journey, and to my surprise, it resonated with others too.

Prints like Spring Cholla, Agave Moon, and Cereus Glow now hang in homes across the Southwest. You can find them in galleries in Tubac, St. George, Park City, and Springdale — and hopefully, in your space someday too. There’s just something about desert light that feels both calming and electric, and I love sharing that with others.

My Why

For me, photography has always been more than just pictures. It’s therapy. It’s connection. It’s a way to celebrate what’s real. I’ve used my camera through joy and grief, through breast cancer and healing, through transitions and triumphs. It’s my constant. It’s how I breathe.

Color plays a huge role in my work. I’m a big believer in the emotional power of color therapy — especially bright, bold hues that lift the spirit. Whether it’s the pop of a red dress in a field of sage or the purple glow of twilight over the mountains, I use color intentionally to inspire joy and creativity.
